The medical decision to prescribe or not prescribe any treatment for an individual patient is strictly a decision for the treating clinician, in consultation with their patient. Similarly, the decision to dispense or not dispense a prescribed medicine, is a decision made by individual pharmacists in the exercise of their professional judgement. The Minister for Health has no role in either decision-making process including the sourcing of medicinal products.

Negotiations are currently ongoing between EU member states on the Critical Medicines Act which includes tools to leverage the full potential of the EU single market, to encourage manufacturing activity in the EU and to boost EU competitiveness.
