I propose to take Questions Nos. 140 and 141 together.
The Government is committed to supporting and continuing engagement with all stakeholders, including data centre operators, CRU, Eirgrid and ESBN, for the sustainable growth of data centres and achieving the twin objective of decarbonisation and digitalisation at the heart of Government policy to deliver ambitious goals in relation to climate, economic growth and digitalisation.
The Programme for Government contains key commitments and prioritising enhancing data centres’ use of renewable energy sources, energy efficient technology and effective solutions, such as waste heat capture for district heating to reduce their carbon footprint. The Government has also prioritised an increased and unprecedented investment in our grid and expanding our energy generation, with significant support for energy efficiency and renewables, which will be advantageous for all customers.
The CRU is finalising its review of the connection policy for large energy users, specifically for data centres. The aim of this review is to provide a new pathway for LEUs to connect to the electricity system while considering the capacity of our energy and grid infrastructure and also minimising the impact on national carbon emissions. The policy will look to provide clarity on connection obligations that will apply against data centres in the short to medium term. The publication of the connection policy for large energy users is expected shortly.
