My Department is responsible for processing Foreign Birth Registration (FBR) applications for people who are born abroad and claim Irish citizenship through a grandparent born in Ireland or through a parent who has claimed citizenship also through FBR or Naturalisation.

Due to the complex nature of FBR applications, involving verification of documents across many jurisdictions and generations, the current processing time for fully complete applications is approximately 9 months. The processing time begins when the physical application form and supporting documents are received by the FBR office. Applications that require further supporting documents will take longer to process.

With regard to the specific application about which the Deputy has enquired, this application was generated online and the fee paid on 25/03/2023. The application form and supporting documents were received in the FBR office on 24/10/2025.

Therefore, this application is currently queuing to be examined by the FBR Entitlement team. An entitlement officer will be in contact with the applicant again should any further clarification be required.
