Ceisteanna (274)

Edward Timmins

Ceist:

274. Deputy Edward Timmins asked the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment who is responsible for historic weirs that have been eroded and allowed to deteriorate, such as the Slaney river weir at Baltinglass, County Wicklow. [73287/25]

Historic weirs on rivers were generally constructed for private purposes, such as milling, fisheries or water management and responsibility for the maintenance or repair of weirs rests with the landowner.

A public body would have responsibility for such a weir if the structure was constructed by, or formally incorporated into, a statutory scheme under that body’s functions. My Department has no responsibility for the ownership or maintenance of weirs.
