149. Deputy Pa Daly asked the Minister for Transport his plans to review the regulations for e-scooter use in Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2734/26]
Amharc ar fhreagraThe Government introduced regulations in 2024 to govern the use and technical specification of e-scooters on public roads. E-scooters may only be used on public roads if they comply with the 2024 Regulations and the rules of the road apply to e-scooters in the same way as bicycles.
Further regulations address road signs, location restrictions, detention and seizure powers for An Garda Síochána and fixed charge penalties.
Department officials engage regularly with An Garda Síochána with respect to enforcement of e-scooter regulations. My officials have asked them to provide any suggestions or changes to legislation that would assist them in the fulfilment of their enforcement role. In addition, officials will be examining the issue of mandating protective equipment for e-scooter and other micromobility users. I intend to bring forward proposals in these regards in the near future.
