The Labour Court is an independent statutory office under the aegis of my Department responsible for promoting industrial relations harmony in the State and being the sole appellate body in employment rights cases referred to it on appeal, from the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC).

Given the statutory independence of the Court, the Deputy will appreciate that, as Minister, I must have regard to that independence and not intervene when the Court exercises its statutory quasi-judicial functions.

I am informed that the Labour Court has consulted with the applicant and suggested next steps to him and it awaits hearing back from him.

In the event that the Court receives a request from both parties for an urgent hearing, it can consider such requests taking into account its resources and schedule.
