Regulations, setting our requirements around Irish language and bilingual public signage, were brought into effect through the Official Languages Act 2003 (Section 9) Regulations 2008.

Compliance with those Regulations is a matter for each public body prescribed under the Act, with monitoring of that compliance a matter for Oifig an Choimisinéara Teanga. An Coimisinéir Teanga's annual report, which is laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas each year, sets out any areas of note regarding compliance under the Act.

Having recently published the Action Plan for Irish Language Public Services, I look forward to also reporting on progress made under that Plan and the Act in general in my own annual report, which is also laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas.

The publication of this Plan, coupled with the increase I secured under Budget 2026 for the Irish language and the Gaeltacht, will now accelerate the move towards a bilingual public service, and indeed bilingual society, in line with Programme for Government commitments.
