228. Deputy Thomas Gould asked the Minister for Defence the actions she has taken to resolve the issue whereby 85% of Defence Force buildings in Cork are uninhabitable. [12458/26]
Amharc ar fhreagraDeputy, thank you for your question. I assume the Deputy is referring to the 11 uninhabitable houses out of a total of 13 residential properties located in Crosshaven, Collins Barracks and Haulbowline Naval base. None of these properties can be brought up to a habitable standard without significant work, and many were built prior to the introduction of building regulations. As such, considerable work is needed to bring them up to modern standards.
It was in this context that consultants were commissioned to assess the condition of the Defence Forces vacant housing stock and it's suitability for conversion/refurbishment to provide for additional single living-in accommodation for Defence Forces personnel.
My officials will engage with the Defence Forces to ascertain the optimal way to develop accommodation using these properties.
