The new housing action plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities sets out the intention to establish a New Urban Communities Taskforce with representation from key stakeholders, including Government Departments, the Land Development Agency, and regional and local authorities. The Taskforce will provide a dedicated focus to the identification of locations for the delivery of housing growth at scale and will work with the newly established Housing Activation Office and infrastructure providers to evaluate and prioritise the infrastructural needs of these areas.
The Taskforce will build upon the work undertaken by the Housing for All TOD Working Group which was jointly led by my Department and the Department of Transport, and included representation from the National Transport Authority and the Land Development Agency. The group published a report on opportunities in the Dublin Area in 2023. Further reports on opportunities in the Mid-East, Cork, Limerick, Galway and Waterford will be finalised shortly.
My Department intends to establish the Taskforce in Q1 2026, with the Taskforce utilising the structures established by the Housing Activation Office (HAO) to evaluate and prioritise the infrastructural needs of particular areas to enable Government determine where to prioritise infrastructure investment to achieve the scale of housing delivery required to meet the Government’s housing targets. The Taskforce will report to me on progress and will also liaise with the Housing Activation Delivery Group and Housing Activation Industry Group.
