The current data landscape in relation to tourism accommodation is comprehensive but evolving. Fáilte Ireland maintains statutory accommodation registers under the Tourist Traffic Acts and through the National Quality Assurance Framework (NQAF), providing an established evidence base for the sector. The introduction of a statutory register for all Short-Term Letting (STL) accommodation, to be implemented by Fáilte Ireland this Summer, will significantly enhance visibility of this segment and strengthen the overall data architecture supporting tourism policy.

To support forward planning, Fáilte Ireland has developed a Tourism Accommodation Capacity and Pipeline Monitor. This strategic tool tracks existing capacity, as well as projects progressing through planning, construction, and opening phases. It enables early identification of supply constraints, provides insight into regional and sectoral development trends, and supports evidence-based decision-making. The monitor also serves as an important information resource for industry stakeholders and policymakers alike.

The forthcoming Tourism Accommodation Strategy, a key commitment under A New Era for Irish Tourism, will set out a clear framework to strengthen, diversify, and expand Ireland’s accommodation offering. The Strategy will focus on unlocking development in areas with significant untapped tourism potential, promoting balanced regional growth and delivering sustainable, year-round economic benefits to communities nationwide.

Insights drawn from the capacity and pipeline monitor, the existing registers, and the new STL register will collectively inform the Strategy and guide long-term accommodation planning. This integrated, data-driven approach will ensure that Ireland’s tourism infrastructure evolves in line with changing consumer preferences and global travel trends.

Fáilte Ireland currently reports 225,577 tourism bedspaces recorded across its registers, reflecting the scale of the sector and providing a strong foundation for future strategic development.
