While the Garda Commissioner is operationally responsible for the allocation of Garda resources, including deployment and allocation to specialist units, I continue to engage regularly with him to ensure our Gardaí have the resources they need.

Getting more Gardaí on our streets to prevent and detect crime is my first priority as Minister. This Government is committed to ensuring that An Garda Síochána has the resources it needs, with Budget 2026 providing unprecedented funding of €2.74 billion to support recruitment and staffing.

The current strength of the overall Garda workforce, consisting of Gardaí, Garda Staff and Reserves, is over 18,200 as of December 2025, which is significantly higher than in December 2009.

I am assured by the Garda Commissioner that the allocation of Garda resources is kept under continued review to ensure their optimum use. As more Gardaí are recruited, the Commissioner will have more personnel at his disposal to assign to specialist units.

Across An Garda Síochána, there are a number of national specialist units who support divisions and in their operational duties and investigations. If the Deputy wishes to ask about allocations to a specific unit then a more detailed breakdown could be provided.
