Oil markets are responding to developments arising from the conflict in the Middle East and the Government is extremely conscious of the impact that the global spike in oil prices is having on people and businesses across the country.

My Department is working with the International Energy Agency (IEA), the European Commission and Member States as part of a co-ordinated response to these developments, including the recently announced IEA release of international strategic oil reserves.

In June last year, my Department established the National Energy Affordability Taskforce to identify, assess and implement measures that will enhance energy affordability for households and businesses while delivering key renewables commitments, and protecting security of supply and economic stability. The Taskforce membership includes representatives of various Government Departments and key energy sector stakeholders.

The focus of the Taskforce is the preparation of an Energy Affordability Action Plan to be completed in Q3. The Action Plan will include a review of cost drivers within the energy sector and consideration of how the EU Action Plan for Affordable Energy and associated guidance can be implemented in an Irish context.

To ensure that the domestic fuel market operates in the interest of consumers, the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, under the aegis of the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, has responsibility for ensuring that the market is functioning correctly and that consumers are not being unfairly disadvantaged.

The course of action referred to in the Question is not being considered due to the impacts it would have on human health and the environment.
