I met with Spanish Minister for the Ecological Transition, Sara Aagesen, at the International Energy Agency (IEA) Ministerial Meeting in Paris this February. Minister Aagesen and I spoke about jointly undertaking further work on the feasibility of an electricity interconnector between Spain and Ireland.

Increasing our interconnection will safeguard our future energy security, decarbonise our electricity systems, and help drive down consumer costs.

Since that meeting, officials in my Department have been working with their Spanish equivalents to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which will establish the political commitment to a Spanish-Irish interconnector, and will enable us to work together to progress the technical and financial feasibility of this key piece of strategic infrastructure.

I expect to sign this MOU in the coming weeks.
