In February, I launched a scheme to support the establishment of new industrial-scale flour mills in Ireland. The scheme, which is being administered by Enterprise Ireland, aims to rebuild national milling capacity and improve the resilience of the Irish bakery and food supply chain. Delivery of the scheme will support the objectives of Food Vision 2030, the Government’s strategy for the production of safe and sustainable food in Ireland.

The establishment of a commercial scale flour mill or mills in Ireland would have a number of key benefits including strengthening security of food supply and improved competitiveness and sustainability in the bakery sector. Development of the scheme was informed by close consultation with industry stakeholders.

Enterprise Ireland is engaging directly with companies considering new or expanded milling investments of scale and will assesses proposals received in line with EU State aid rules.

Proposed projects will need to demonstrate the ability to produce between 60,000-80,000 tonnes of high-quality, wheat flour annually. Projects must also demonstrate that they can strengthen the competitiveness, sustainability and resilience of Ireland’s bakery and food supply chain. Supported projects will be expected to involve modern and efficient milling infrastructure.

Separately to the new scheme, small or artisanal mills with an export focus, and who are eligible to be clients of Enterprise Ireland, can also be considered for funding under Enterprise Ireland’s existing supports.
