Fáilte Ireland, as the National Tourism Development Authority, works closely with a range of public and private stakeholders to support the sustainable development of tourism experiences that are rooted in local culture, heritage and community. Dublin 8 is an area of significant historical and cultural importance and already forms part of a number of established visitor journeys, including those centred on cultural heritage, food, and creative industries.
In line with Fáilte Ireland’s values and strategic objectives, the focus is on supporting place-based tourism, enhancing the overall visitor experience, encouraging visitor dispersal, and ensuring that tourism delivers positive outcomes for local communities. This includes working with local stakeholders to showcase authentic experiences and promote lesser-known neighbourhoods, thereby strengthening Dublin’s tourism offering beyond traditional hotspots.
While markets can play a valuable role in animating places and enhancing the visitor experience, particularly in showcasing local food, crafts and culture, it should be noted that the establishment, regulation and operation of markets within Dublin city are a matter for Dublin City Council, and do not fall within the remit of my Department or Fáilte Ireland.
That said, where markets or similar initiatives are developed by the relevant local authority and community partners, Fáilte Ireland may support their promotion as part of the wider tourism offering, where they align with national tourism strategies and sustainability principles. This can include inclusion in destination marketing, storytelling initiatives, integration into broader visitor itineraries and may feature on the Discover Ireland website, the official tourism source for domestic holidays in Ireland.
My Department will continue to support Fáilte Ireland in its collaborative approach with local authorities, community groups and industry partners to ensure that tourism development in areas such as Dublin 8 is sustainable, inclusive and benefits both visitors and residents alike.
