Price setting by electricity suppliers and charge point operators is a commercial and operational matter for the companies concerned and the Department of Transport has no role. Each such company has its own approach to pricing mechanisms in accordance with factors such as the overall company strategic direction and developments in their cost base.

Home Charging is by far the cheapest way of fuelling an electric vehicle. It is expected that 80% of charging will take place at home. Government policy, as evidenced in the EV Infrastructure Strategy which closed for consultation in the last week, is to support home charging as the default option for charging in as many cases as possible. To this end, ZEVI funds grants for the installation of home chargers which will assist the public to avail of the most advantageous charging rates.

In July 2025, the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment (DCEE) adopted a Strategy Statement on Private Wires which among other things, would enable residents without off street parking to avail of home charging solutions for on-street parking. Department officials are working with officials in relevant Government Departments and local government to develop a framework under new legislation to enable people without access to off street parking to use a home charging solution for on street parking. We expect this to be finalised later this year.
