The outbreak of conflict on 28th February 2026 between US & Israel and Iran, and in particular the Iranian response to the initial attack, has been far-reaching and has sparked major reaction across the middle east, including in Lebanon.

A rocket barrage fired by Hezbollah into northern Israel on 1st March reopened a conflict in Lebanon. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) responded with a number of strikes across Lebanon, including on Beirut and in the UNIFIL area of operations in South Lebanon. There has been ongoing kinetic activity between the IDF and Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon since, albeit in more limited fashion since the temporary ceasefire agreed on 16-17th April last.

While the temporary ceasefire represents a positive and welcome development, the security situation remains fragile and requires continued vigilance. IDF activity within South Lebanon and in the IRISHPOLBATT Area of Operations remains at a high level but kinetic activity has reduced noticeably since the ceasefire came into effect. While I recognise that the ceasefire is fragile and time-limited; however, its extension has the potential to ease tensions and contribute to a degree of stability in the region.

Immediately prior to the current outbreak of conflict in March, the Irish battalion had continued to conduct operational tasks on a daily basis, which included the provision of security, vehicle and foot patrols, checkpoints, establishing and occupying temporary observation posts and liaison & engagement with local leaders and cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces deployed in the UNIFIL area of operation in carrying out joint operations. Currently, under UNIFIL HQ guidance, UNIFIL continues to conduct limited framework operations, ensuring the necessary and appropriate force protection measures are in place to ensure the safety and security of personnel.

With respect to conditions at Irish positions, I am advised that logistical challenges can arise during periods of heightened tension and restricted movement. These issues are actively managed within the UN mission framework, and every effort is made to ensure that contingents have access to essential supplies and supports. The wellbeing of personnel, including access to medical care and welfare services, remains a key priority for me.

In terms of that safety and security of personnel, I have been advised that all Irish personnel remain in place in UNIFIL positions, and that all are accounted for and well. All Defence Forces’ personnel continue to comply with UN security precautions including taking shelter in protected positions as and when required.

Finally, I also wish to reassure the Deputy that ongoing risk assessments are carried out in the mission area and personal equipment and force assets are continually reviewed so that Defence Forces personnel are appropriately equipped to fulfil their role and support their safety. Unfortunately, no mission is without danger, but based on the military advice I have received, I am satisfied that all appropriate security measures are in place to provide for the safety of all Defence Forces personnel serving with UNIFIL.
