The adoption of AI is one of the largest structural forces that is shaping our country. We need to ensure that noone is left behind. This ambition underpins the Digital Ireland – Connecting our People, Securing our Future" the Government’s strategy. It echoes the recommendations of the National Skills Council and what I heard at the first of a series of Skills Roundtable discussions – a national programme of high-level engagements focused on ensuring Ireland has the right skills for a rapidly changing economy.

The acquisition of AI literacy by learners in education and learners in the workplace is one my priorities. To this effect, I have launched an upskilling platform AIready.ie. and a set of micro-qualifications related to AI available, for free, in the country’s 16 ETBs. In response to the new competency requirements for those in education, many programmes and courses are being revised.

To guide the responsible, values-based adoption of generative artificial intelligence in Irish higher education, the HEA leads on policy development on the use of generative AI with regards to teaching and learning in higher education settings. Earlier in the year, it published Generative AI in Higher Education Teaching & Learning: Policy Framework to provide guidance and promote the development of AI literacy for both students and staff.

Quality and Qualifications Ireland established the National Academic Integrity Network (NAIN) in 2019 as a peer-led initiative that produced Academic Integrity Guidelines and Generative AI Guidelines for Educators. These resources help institutions, staff, and learners understand AI’s capabilities and limits, promote ethical use, and support students in developing independent knowledge, self-awareness, and practices that uphold academic integrity.
