Amharc ar fhreagraThe Programme for Government 2025 commits to continuing efforts to raise air quality standards, especially in urban areas, ensuring healthier environments for all.
Proposed changes to the Air Pollution Act 1987 contained in the Air Pollution (Amendment) Bill 2025 were developed to enhance the enforcement powers of local authorities and bring them more in line with those already available to local authorities under other similar environmental legislation. The legislation aims to underpin the delivery of Ireland’s Clean Air Strategy and to support continued improvement in air quality and public health. At present, the Department’s legislative focus is on strengthening the enforcement powers of local authorities, particularly regarding the enforcement of the Solid Fuel Regulations.
My Department is aware of the proposals put forward by the Deputy in the correspondence. There are currently no plans to introduce such a system at present, however, the matter will be kept under review in the context of wider air quality and solid fuel policy developments.
