Sheep Ireland was established in 2008 to put in place a new breeding infrastructure for the Irish Sheep industry. In this regard Sheep Ireland carries out genetic evaluations and implements a breeding programme (functions previously carried out by my Department) with the ultimate aim of increasing the productivity, profitability and sustainability of the National flock. A Block Grant is paid to the organisation. My Department also provides funding for a range of projects in sheep breeding (Infrastructures Grant) deemed essential to delivery of sheep breeding programmes.

Key functions of Sheep Ireland are:

• Establishing and further developing a sheep breeding programme and providing genetic evaluations for sheep in Ireland.

• Building, operating and maintaining the Sheep Ireland database.

• Designing, establishing and supporting the sheep breeding programmes.
