I am informed by publicjobs that during the application stage of the Principal Officer (PO) 2025 competition, candidates were advised that vacancies requiring the provision of a full range of services through the Irish language (Functional Bilingual roles) could be filled from this campaign. Candidates were invited to indicate on the application form their interest in such roles and to self-assess their Irish language proficiency.

A total of 3,188 applications were received for the PO 2025 competition, of which 145 candidates (4.5%) self-assessed their Irish language skills at B2 (upper-intermediate) level of competence or above.

At present, there are three candidates on the active panel awaiting assignment who have self-assessed their Irish language proficiency at B2 level or above. It should be noted that none of these candidates have undergone a formal assessment of their Irish language skills.
