The government recognises the important role that school libraries play in supporting improved literacy, learning fostering a love for reading, providing equitable access to resources and student engagement across all age groups.

Decisions in relation to Budget 2027, including any proposals for new or expanded funding schemes, are a matter for the annual estimates and budgetary process. It would not be appropriate to comment in advance of that process.

The Department of Education and Youth continues to engage with stakeholders, including representative and sectoral bodies, on issues related to literacy and access to reading resources in schools. Consideration will continue to be given to how best to support schools in this area, having regard to available resources and wider education priorities.
