Deputy Martin Daly asked the Minister for Defence the rationale behind the Defence Forces policy whereby serving personnel are required to discharge and re-enlist in order to undertake apprenticeships or Defence Forces funded education and training schemes; the reason this process necessitates the issuing of a new service number and results in the loss of accrued seniority; whether consideration has been given to an alternative approach whereby the required return of service period could instead be added to an individual's existing contract in order to avoid the need for discharge and re-enlistment; and if she will make a statement on the matter.
