Road traffic legislation is enforced as part of the day-to-day duties of members of An Garda Síochána, as well as through a programme of high-visibility road safety and enforcement operations carried out in partnership with other state agencies, in order to make our roads safer for all.
The Garda Authorities have advised heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) with five or more axles are not permitted to enter certain restricted areas between certain hours unless they have a permit.
Any such offences are dealt with by way of summons. I am informed that less than ten summonses were issued between 1 January 2020 and 30 April 2026. In line with An Garda Síochána Analysis Services (GSAS) reporting standards a breakdown of figures for offences with less than ten records are not provided.
An Garda Síochána have further advised this information is based upon operational data from the PULSE system that was available on 21 May 2026.
It may be of interest to the Deputy to know that An Garda Síochána also publish information in relation to roads policing offences which is publicly available and can be found at the following link: www.garda.ie/en/roads-policing/statistics/roads%20policing%20offences%20by%20region%20and%20division/.
