My Department funds Network Safety Analysis of the Regional and Local Road Network across the country. Using available collision datasets, high collision locations are identified and Locations of Interest (LOI) reports are produced. These LOI reports are then issued to the relevant local authority and form the basis for its application for funding for Safety Improvement Works under the Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme.

In accordance with Section 13 of the Roads Act 1993, as amended, the improvement and maintenance of regional and local roads is the statutory responsibility of each local authority. Work on such roads is funded from Councils' own resources, supplemented by State road grants. The initial selection and prioritisation of work to be funded is a matter for local authorities.

In 2026, my Department allocated €14 million towards Safety Improvement Works, which is funding over 330 low cost safety schemes nationally, representing an 8% increase over the 2025 allocation.

In relation to County Mayo, there were 20 LOIs identified between 2022 and 2025. In 2026, under the Regional and Local Roads Grant Programme, Mayo County Council received €913,500 in funding for 21 Safety Improvement Works, including funding for the renewal of Regulatory Road Marking at Junctions.
