The Future of Media Commission (FOMC) recommended that TG4 should have independent editorial control over its news services. This is to allow for greater plurality in news coverage and allow TG4 to provide an enhanced service to its audiences. The recommendation was accepted in principle in Government subject to consideration of the financial and operational implications of its implementation.
As part of the FOMC's implementation plan, Coimisiún na Meán has been working with both broadcasters to consider the implications of the recommendation, the possible options to deliver greater editorial control for TG4 in a cost effective manner that can deliver for audiences, and how this might be achieved on an incremental basis. There are many issues which have to be addressed as part of this process, from financial to human resources and operational impacts.
As part of this process, both TG4 and RTÉ continue to engage to progress TG4 achieving editorial control of Nuacht TG4. I understand that An Coimisiún and the broadcasters are working towards developing an agreed plan which is cost effective, sustainable, and serves audience needs.
The Department continues to monitor the situation and is being advised of progress by Coimisiún na Meán. The aim is for an agreed proposal which is practical and cost effective, and which provides value for money and best serves Irish audiences. The Deputy would appreciate, given the independence of both broadcasters, that my Department would not have the detailed financial information sought in his question.
I hope that good progress will be made on this and expect to hear more from Coimisiún na Meán and the broadcasters later in 2026.
