321. Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú asked the Minister for Education and Youth the number and location of secondary schools that are awaiting a formal lease agreement to be finalised after their management was taken over by State-run entities such as ETBs from the Catholic church; and if she will make a statement on the matter. In relation to the information requested, the transfer of school management from Catholic patrons to Education and Training Board (ETB) patronage generally takes place at primary level rather than at post-primary level.

All schools operating on land owned by the Department of Education and Youth are subject to a formal lease agreement between the school’s patron and the Minister for Education and Youth. The Chief State Solicitor’s Office, acting on behalf of the Department, engages with the legal representatives of each patron to negotiate and execute these lease agreements.
