For a school to change from an English medium school to a Gaeilscoil, the school must first obtain the approval of its patron. If the patron is in approval with the change the patron must submit a formal request to the department. The Board of Management (BOM) of the school should be notified of this request prior to the issuing of the letter.

It is advisable that the Principal and Board of Management of the school consult with relevant parent association bodies/representative groups and the wider school community beforehand. If there is a genuine wish or need for a Gaeilscoil in the area-and the establishment of one will not impact negatively on other schools in the vicinity-then this should assist matters.

The School Principal may find Gaeloideachas and An Chomhairle um Oideachas Gaeltachta agus Gaelscolaíochta (COGG) useful sources of information on Irish medium education.

Regarding necessary supports, these are addressed on a case-by-case basis at the appropriate time, taking account of the needs of the school.
