In January, the Government approved a major expansion of Tyndall National Institute, marking a decisive step in advancing Ireland’s ambition to lead globally in semiconductor research, innovation and advanced manufacturing. This is the first major project that will be delivered under the landmark infrastructure and talent investment programme, INSPIRE which I launched last year, also representing an investment of over €100 million under the National Development Plan, significantly strengthening Ireland’s global position in cutting edge semiconductor research and innovation.
I was delighted to launch Tyndall’s new strategy Tyndall 2030 on 25 April in Cork with An Taoiseach. Tyndall 2030 sets an ambitious direction for Tyndall over the next five years. It expresses an ambition for Tyndall to become a globally leading research-performing and technology-delivering institute which is internationally known for excellence.
The expansion project is currently progressing through final Governance and approval steps, with approval now granted by the Department for UCC to enter into a contract with the preferred contractor to deliver the development. As this process is ongoing, a detailed delivery timeline has not yet been confirmed. Drawdown of the approved funding allocation will commence when the relevant approvals are complete and eligible expenditure is incurred.
