228. Deputy Jennifer Whitmore asked the Minister for Climate, Energy and the Environment for an update on the marine protected areas legislation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [52307/26]

On 12 November 2025, Government approved the preparation of a General Scheme of a Maritime Area Planning (Marine Protected Areas) (Amendment) Bill which will amend the Maritime Area Planning Act 2021. The proposed Bill will provide a legislative basis for the designation and effective management of marine protected areas (MPAs) in Irish waters.

On 7 July 2026, Government approved the General Scheme of the Maritime Area Planning (Marine Protected Areas) (Amendment) Bill. This general scheme may be found at the following link: https://assets.gov.ie/static/documents/0343097c/General_Scheme_of_a_Maritime_Area_Planning_Marine_Protected_Areas_Amendment_Bill_2026.pdf.

My Department will be seeking priority drafting for this legislation and will work to publish the Bill at the earliest opportunity.
