Ceisteanna (215)

Colm Burke

Ceist:

215. Deputy Colm Burke asked the Minister for Education and Youth the reason a school’s (details supplied) SEN re-purposing grant was refused; if the school can re-apply given that there will be five SEN classes and challenges with accommodation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. The school to which the Deputy refers was sanctioned to open one autism inclusion class for September 2026 by the National Council for Special Education (NCSE). The school received a €30,000 Start Up Grant to establish the class.

Autism inclusion classes are sanctioned on the basis that there are no physical space requirements and as such, additional funding cannot be provided under the SEN Repurposing Small Scale Works Scheme.

The Department is undertaking investigative works at this school during the summer period and the accommodation challenges the school refers to will be considered during this time.

Officials at my Department will continue to engage and liaise with the school authority.
