2204. Deputy Emer Currie asked the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration the number of vehicles detected by Gardaí with non-compliant number plates; the number of fixed charge notices issued to drivers for this offence, broken down per year from 2020 to date in 2026, in tabular form; and if he will make a statement on the matter. Road traffic laws are enforced by Gardaí assigned to Roads Policing and as part of the day-to-day duties of uniformed Gardaí nationwide. This includes a programme of high-visibility road safety and enforcement operations carried out in partnership with other state agencies. My Department has no operational role in these matters and does not collate or hold data on the number of Fixed Charge Penalty Notices (FCPN) issued for any offence.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the offence relating to non-compliant vehicle registration plates was introduced in October 2025. Accordingly, figures are available from October 2025 onwards only.

There have been 8,374 Fixed Charge Notices (FCNs) issued for non-compliant vehicle registration plates from October 2025 to June 2026. These are broken down by month below:

The figures relate to incidents which occurred between 1 October 2025 and 30 June 2026, inclusive. They are based on operational data from the FCPS and PULSE systems as at 22 July 2026 and are liable to change.
