I propose to take Questions Nos. 1770 to 1772, inclusive, together.
In line with the provisions of section 88 of the Courts of Justice Act 1924, Peace Commissioners are appointed, and may be removed from that appointment, by the Minister for Justice, Home Affairs and Migration. A review of the role and functions of Peace Commissioners, as well as of the appointment process, is currently underway in my Department. The main areas of focus for the review include:
• a review of existing functions, powers, appointments, removal and complaints procedures for Peace Commissioners
• consultation with relevant stakeholders
• updating and maintenance of the Roll of Peace Commissioners and consideration to making a Register of Peace Commissioners available online.
While my Department maintains the Roll of Peace Commissioners and every effort is made to keep it accurate, the data may include Peace Commissioners who are no longer active. My Department relies on Peace Commissioners themselves, or others familiar with their circumstances, to let us know of any changes in circumstances of individual Peace Commissioners, since their appointment. It is, therefore, difficult to provide precise information on the total number currently serving.
However, I can confirm to the Deputy that the number of Peace Commissioners recorded in County Offaly is currently 74. I have asked officials to contact the Deputy directly to provide him with the names and contact details of the 74 Peace Commissioners currently recorded as appointed in County Offaly.
My Department is reviewing the Roll of Peace Commissioners, with a view to making it as accurate as possible and good progress has been made to date in this regard. Once that work has been completed, the question of publishing the roll in an accessible format will be considered.
