Niamh Smyth

Ceist:

624. Deputy Niamh Smyth asked the Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport if he will review correspondence (details supplied) regarding Irish arts recognition and synthetic media research; if he will outline what supports or funding streams available through his Department or its agencies for artists and researchers working at the intersection of the arts and artificial intelligence; whether specific measures are being considered to address the impact of synthetic media and deepfake technologies on the creative sector; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The potential impact of AI on the creative sector is an issue of which I am aware.   To obtain expert guidance, insights, and recommendations in regard to emerging issues the AI Advisory Council has been established an independent body to provide expert advice to the Irish Government on all aspects of artificial intelligence. The Council comprises leading experts from academia, industry and civil society.  In addition, issues relating to copyright are a matter for the Department for Enterprise, Tourism and Employment.

While there are a range of funding streams for artists from various bodies I am not aware of any particular stream focused specifically at the intersection of the arts and artificial intelligence, though many artists will respond to this issue in their own way.
