Ceisteanna (256)

Pearse Doherty

Ceist:

256. Deputy Pearse Doherty asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Finance the way in which the Exchequer cash reserves, and other liquid assets, were reduced by approximately €10 billion over the four months from the end of 2025 until the end of April 2026; and if he will make a statement on the matter. The National Treasury Management Agency (NTMA) has informed me that exchequer cash and liquid asset balances ebb and flow throughout the year and are affected by many different factors such as the proceeds of borrowing, the repayment of maturing debt, tax and other Exchequer revenues, and Exchequer expenditure.

At end-April 2026, Exchequer cash and liquid asset balances were €28.9bn. The equivalent figure at year-end 2025 was €38.9bn.

The reduction in cash and liquid asset balances in the first four months of 2026 is largely a function of net debt repayments of €5.1bn and the funding of an Exchequer deficit of €4.7bn.
