I can advise the Deputy that any person born outside the island of Ireland can become an Irish citizen if one of their parents was an Irish citizen at the time of their birth or through an Irish national grandparent born in Ireland.

A person can also obtain Irish citizenship through the Foreign Births Register, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is responsible for the operation of the Register. For more information please see: www.dfa.ie/citizenship/born-abroad/registering-a-foreign-birth/

I have no plans at this time to review the process through which children of Irish citizens born abroad can become Irish citizens.
