The Garda Commissioner is responsible for the management and administration of An Garda Síochána under Section 33 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024, which includes all operational policing matters.

Road traffic legislation is enforced as part of the day-to-day duties of members of An Garda Síochána, as well as through a programme of high-visibility road safety and enforcement operations carried out in partnership with other state agencies, in order to make our roads safer for all.

I am informed by Garda authorities that there were 1,066 incidents in which a vehicle was detained by Garda authorities in Galway division for having no insurance in 2025 and 364 as of 31 May 2026, the latest date for which figures are available. Vehicles seized or detained relate to those detained under s41 of the Road Traffic Act.

In the interest of transparency, An Garda Síochána publishes information in relation to figures relating to Roads Policing Offences and Activity nationwide. This can be found at the following link:www.garda.ie/en/roads-policing/statistics/roads%20policing%20offences%20by%20region%20and%20division
