It is up to each individual school to decide the subjects they offer, for example under Junior Cycle, the schools decide the subject and short course mix for their own students giving them the flexibility to meet their students’ needs, in the most appropriate way. A school can decide to designate for example, geography, as one of the subjects to be provided.

Provision of subjects is a matter for the individual schools depending on demand and resources available. The programme that each school plans and delivers should be based on the Department's approved syllabi and specifications, and the teaching hours should be registered on the school timetable.

Parents and students can research prospective schools' policies and the curriculum they offer before deciding whether to apply, including through schools' websites, many of which can be found at www.gov.ie/en/schools/?roll_number=&school_level=POST+PRIMARY
